We examine smears and skin scrapings in our own laboratory, so the skin findings and the clinical examination come together in a single treatment decision.

Our approach

How we approach the skin

A detailed history, a careful and thorough physical examination of the skin and any changes on it, and specialised methods (smear and skin scraping examinations) are the foundation of good diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions. The most common skin pathologies are various parasites (fleas, ticks, demodex mites, mange mites) and allergic manifestations affecting the skin or its associated organs.

The skin often reveals what is happening deeper: changes in the coat, ears and claws can be the first sign of an allergy, a hormonal disorder or a parasitic infestation. That is why, alongside the skin examination, we always take a detailed history of diet, environment, season and previous treatment.

We perform cytological examination of smears from the skin and the ear in our own laboratory. Sometimes these examinations are enough to reach a final diagnosis — for example, in cases of fungal overgrowth in the ear.

How are skin lesions diagnosed?

A detailed history, a careful and thorough physical examination of the skin and its lesions, and specialised diagnostic methods (skin scrapings and cytology smears) are the foundation for accurate diagnosis and treatment of skin disease.

What are the most common skin conditions in dogs and cats?

The most common skin conditions are caused by various parasites (fleas, ticks, Demodex mites, mange mites) and allergic reactions affecting the skin or related organs.

Is itching always treated with the same product?

No. Itching is a sign, not a diagnosis — the cause may be a parasite, an allergy, or disease of another organ. That is why we examine your pet before starting treatment and, when needed, perform a skin scrape or smear.
